Industry sales surpassed Belgium, and Brazil has overtaken Belgium as the largest export market for China's new energy vehicles. Chinese automakers have increased sales to non-European markets as the European Union launches an anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese electric vehicles.

In April, China's exports of all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles reached 13 times the year-on-year figure of 40,163 units, making it the country's largest export market for the second consecutive month, according to data from the Passenger Car Association.

However, as Brazil attempts to encourage homegrown car production, the country's catalogue began to further increase import tariffs on the country's and hybrid vehicles in July this year. As a result, several Chinese carmakers strength increase investment in local production in Brazil.

In terms of overall auto export comparison, Brazil also became China's second-largest auto export destination in April this year, second only to Russia. Russia, which is subject to Western sanctions, is expected to remain China's largest auto export market, said Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the Multipliers Association.

Data from the Association also showed that in the first four months of this year, Spain, France, the Netherlands and Norway saw the biggest drop in the number of electric cars imported from China. Cui Dongshu pointed out that the EU's anti-monopoly investigation has disrupted China's auto exports to the EU, but Chinese automakers have been actively exploring export markets such as South America, Australia and ASEAN.

In the first four months of this year, China's car exports to Russia rose 23 per cent to 268,779 units. During the same period, car exports to Mexico and Brazil increased by 27 per cent and 536 per cent to 148,705 and 106,448 units, respectively.
